Chemical Peels

By the age of 22, our skin cycle starts slowing down by 10% each year! Peels work by using acids found naturally in the body to break down the ‘glue’ that holds the dead skin to the fresh skin, speeding up the skin renewal process and generating fresh new cells. This means brighter, more even skin tone, smoother texture, increased collagen production and a non-invasive approach to targeting superficial fine lines, premature ageing, sun damage and pigmentation.

We have 4 Chemicals Peels that we offer in the clinic, each targeting different skin concerns: AHA Universal Peel, Clarity Peel, Even Peel and Rewind Peel.

A thorough consultation must be conducted before going ahead with any treatment plans. As we use Medik8 peels, is important that you are using the recommended prep as this is what is tested & how we can ensure the results are consistent. Medik8’s preparation is as follows: Vitamin C in the morning, sunscreen in the day, and vitamin A at night! Please note that there are many different types, strengths and options when it comes to skin products, and it is important that you are using the correct one for you and your skin type! This will be assessed for you by your therapist during consultation. It is always recommended that you change your bedding the day of your skin treatment so that you are keeping the skin fresh and clean directly after your appointment.

To begin the peel, any oil or dirt will be removed during the double cleansing process. A protective balm will be applied to sensitive areas of the face – corners of eyes, nose, lips and brows.  Pre-peel solution will be applied evenly to the skin – at this point in the treatment you may experience some tingling or warming sensation and notice a bit of an alcohol-like odor. This will be followed by the peel solution being applied to the skin – tingling may intensify or increase, a prickly sensation is normal to experience.

Your therapist will be checking  your comfort levels as the peel processes , this may be up for 10 minutes before it is neutralized, some areas may also be taken off before others.  Once your therapist has determined the end point, cool compress techniques will be used to remove the solution. Again, it is normal to sometimes experience and increase of sensation as this happening, but will quickly subside. A potent serum will be applied to calm and hydrate the skin, followed by a highly rich and nourishing cooling mask to bring the temperature of the skin back down and soothe any lingering sensation on the skin. Finishing products will then be applied to the skin to lock in & protect.

Immediately following your peel, you may experience a sunburn - like sensation. It is normal for the skin to feel dry, tight, and a little bit more light sensitive, you may experience redness for up to 48 hours after. You may notice areas of the skin start to flake or shed lightly, please do not pick or pull at these, you must let the skin heal itself naturally.

It is highly important to avoid any active skin care or exfoliants unless otherwise specified by your therapist for the first week after your peel – you want to keep it gentle and just maintain using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Makeup is generally not recommended, but if you must we advise using a light mineral make-up to avoid clogging any fresh skin.

There are a few products you may be recommended to use by your therapist as part of your tailored treatment plan, but this will be discussed with you further during your consultation. Sun exposure is to be avoided 24 hours post treatment & caution is to be taken when out in the sun – SPF, hat, covered up! A week after your peel you may exfoliate and restart your use of any active skin care. 2 weeks post treatment you will notice your skin has healed, is bright, refreshed and glowy!
